Crane Beach and the Crane Estate

Overview

Crane Beach, a 7-mile long barrier beach system in Ipswich, is one of the largest and most pristine barrier beaches on the North Shore. More than just a beach, Castle Neck supports an extensive, fragile sand dune habitat and the largest pitch pine forest on the North Shore. A myriad of plants, wildlife and birds can be seen along the 5.5 miles of trails winding behind the beach. Crane also provides important nesting habitat for threatened piping plovers.
The Crane Estate is a 59-room Stuart-style mansion built in 1928 by Richard T. Crane Jr. and later donated to the Trustees of Reservations. The grounds are open to the public year-round, and the house is open for guided tours from late spring through early fall.
